Quick Projects For Your Summer Hols

Written by Sarah

Wherever you’re heading on your summer hols this year – whether you’re jetting off to warmer climes, heading to the coast or enjoying a staycation, a holiday is the perfect time to enjoy some crafting. Now, you’ve maybe already arranged a project to take with you and packed your wool, needles and everything else you need accordingly, but if, like us, you’re running a bit behind schedule and just want a couple of quick and easy projects to enjoy while soaking up the sun, then here are a few suggestions. We’ve opted for speedy, easy-to-make-up projects which don’t require a lot of additional materials and can be completed quickly, between stints of epic sandcastle building, applying sun cream and rounds of beach cricket. And while we’d love to knit up a set of baby animals as we sit around the pool, there’s just not enough room in our beach bags for toy stuffing as well as everything else. When you’re choosing a project to take away with you – whether it’s a day at the park or a week’s well-earned holiday – think fun, but also think portable… (And remember there are restrictions on what you can carry in your hand luggage. If in doubt, pack all your craft accessories in your case so you’re not caught out at the airport…)

Sunglasses case

Especially practical at this time of year and quick and easy to make, you can knit up a simple case in just a couple of hours. Customise your colours, go for stripes, or experiment with some fair isle – be as daring as you choose! For added simplicity, knit in one piece, fold in two, and finish with a simple drawstring closing.

Tassel keyring

If pom poms just aren’t your thing, how about a tassel keyring? We know it’s not technically knitting, but you’re still using your yarn to craft a satisfying little accessory that will look great on your beach bag. Go on, you know you want to…

Earphone holder

Put a stop to your earphones getting tangled at the bottom of your back with a simple knit pouch. With patterns available in a variety of styles, there’s no excuse to be in a knot ever again!

Celtic heart knot necklaces

Forgotten to pack your jewellery? No problem – knit yourself something! The perfect accessory, these chunky style necklaces look equally fab paired with a sundress or a jumper and can easily go from day to night. Knit in tropical brights for an on-trend, summer boho look, or use metallic fleck yarn for a touch of evening glamour.

Knitted hairband

Ideal for keeping your hair out of your face on a breezy day at the beach, woollen hairbands come in a variety of patterns and styles – from ‘50s inspired rockabilly creations to oh-so-chic, Gloria Swanson-esque turbans of Hollywood’s golden age. Also a fantastic way of practicing a new stitch!
