Summer Home Knits

It probably hasn’t escaped your attention, but last year, home knits were a huge trend. Of course, when the nights start drawing in it’s understandable that we love a chunky knit throw or cushion to snuggle up to – but our lovely knitted goodies don’t just have to be consigned to the winter months. This summer the trend for all things yarn is still going strong – which means it’s the perfect opportunity to grab those needles and knit up some fabulous new things for your home! Personally, I love to knit things that have a practical purpose (the knitted flamingo on my bookshelves does have a practical purpose I’m sure, I’m just trying to work out what it is…), so I’ve been busy scouring online for inspiring summer home updates…

Hanging Around

Give knitted plant holders a new twist by whipping up a couple in hard-wearing jute, hemp, or even plastic yarn, then take them outside and plant up with fresh herbs for a practical and pretty herb garden.

More than Words

Another huge trend that shows no sign of slowing down is our love of lettering. Make your own wordy decoration by knitting an i-cord and fitting it over some pliable wire shaped to spell out a word or phrase. Think bright and bold colours for high impact – we love the idea of ‘Hello Sunshine’ in a zingy yellow.

Chunky Pouf

We all love a chunky pouf, but they don’t only have to be constrained to the living room. They also make great informal extra seating for the garden – just perfect for BBQ season. Choose a hard-wearing, chunky knit acrylic yarn in a tropical bright for a fun look – or go for a practical chevron or stripe pattern which won’t show up the dirt. If you’re feeling particularly industrious, you could even make a matching chunky throw – perfect for keeping those late summer evening chills at bay.

Nautical weave placemats and bowls

Finger-knitted, nautical-inspired braided bowls and mats evocative of a day at the coast make a great addition to any table. Crafted from a soft rope rather than wool, they’re elegant and understated while still being practical, fun and a modern twist on a knitted favourite.

Lacy Lanterns

Embrace the boho trend with some lace knit lantern covers stretched over simple white paper lanterns or clean and empty jam jars. Pop in an LED candle, then place around your living room or hang up in the garden for a magical midsummer vibe.

Giant Floor Cushions

If you’ve been curious to try the arm-knitting trend for yourself, giant floor cushions are the perfect project. Knit up in a supersoft chunky yarn for a decadent way to relax in the garden.
